I was happy she was speaking out, because the school was making her job harder. She mentioned that her son was getting accolades for being below average so why should he try. She is right. Unfortunately in our society we are doing that too often with our children but we are also doing it with other parts of our lives.
Because we are too afraid to let people fail we have created safety nets in life. Children, now get a trophy just for showing up not for their achievement. The only time I celebrate a participation medal is when someone completes a marathon, an ironman triathlon, or some other test of mind, body and will where less than 1% of the population ever attempt it. For that they do deserve recognition for participation not just because they showed up but because they put effort into getting there.
I watch the government these days and I see the effect of these policies there. No one wants the population of the United States to suffer as that would mean the politicians lose their job. SO when there is a problem they immediately act and make short sighted decisions to fix the problem. Let’s take a look at healthcare. While this was not a short sighted reaction 4 years ago when it was passed, politicians have tried to pass legislation like this for 100 plus years, the way it was written and how it got implemented was.
Four years ago I could have told you that insurance companies would have to cancel policies that didn’t meet requirements. One reason is, in most states, when you renew a policy year to year the company makes minor changes to it, this constitutes a policy change and under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would mean it is a new policy and thus would lose grandfather status. Although the base policy didn’t necessarily change to the consumer, the minor changes were approved by the state insurance commissioner and are classified under the ACA as a new policy based on the language used. So one could tell the Presidents promises were not able to be fulfilled. However the public and politicians listened to it and now are experiencing the consequences of not strategically thinking about the effects.
What is the response? Immediate legislative action and administrative action to postpone the problem. While these are good PR ploys, since there is an election in a year, again the actions are short sighted. First, all insurance policies have to be approved by the state they are in. Since companies have canceled policies they would need to go through the policy approval process, which in a good state may take six months, or in some states up to two years to get approval. Some states have already said they would not accept these policies as they are only for a short term fix. Second, because companies will be hamstrung by their states insurance commissioners’ they will play the bad guy in this whole thing because the President said policies can be extended, the problem is that existing policy has been canceled and approval withdrawn by its state so when it comes up for renewal there will be no option but to get it from the exchange (Individual policies operate on a contract year, date signed to 12 months later, and we will see many more cancelation among the different months). The third reason this is short sighted is, listen to when the President has stated policies will be pushed out, December 1 2014. What happens in November? The mid-term elections happen with some much contested races. He is trying to minimize the negative impact of his signature legislation, even though they voted for it, by showing he has come up with a fix. The problem is if insurance companies figure out a way to comply, although I don’t see they will, while they may get the blame as being greedy the fact is people will still get cancellation notices and the reason will be the ACA, thus keeping it in the press and showing even more ineptness, it will just happen from 2014-2015 leading up to the big national elections in 2016 which will hurt the Democrats more than the mid-term. The House has also taken up legislation to fix the problem. This is also short sighted; even though they are finally trying to help the US citizens instead of their own interests it will actually have a negative effect. That effect simply is the ACA will become further entrenched and they will be seen as supporters. As the law becomes more and more unpopular, US Voters will see they have no help anywhere and there will be a backlash and the system will be deeply entrenched.
The best solution to all of this is to do nothing. Why? Here are some reasons:
1. Politicians need to know they must take the time to pass laws that serve everyone and take the time to think out intended and unintended consequences. Not pass a law then make a bunch of piece meal fixes over time. There will always have to be fixes made, but it shouldn’t be on every piece of legislation like it is now. The only way they will learn is to lose elections.
2. The Voting Population needs to suffer. We need to pay the price for not holding our elected officials to doing our bidding not their partisan bidding. Both parties are guilty of this neither one is innocent. We need to hold them accountable and have them focus on doing what is better for the USA not for a small % of the USA.
3. We’ll never allow a bill to be passed where our own congress people say “We need to pass the bill to know what is in it.” The second Nancy Pelosi said that, there should have been a huge WHOAAA put out, but it wasn’t and now we must pay the price for it.
I don’t want anyone to suffer but the only way we as humans learn is through tough consequences, and frankly we need to have a lesson taught to us.
