On the other hand making decisions in the moment, is a Management decision process. A school district needs to make management decisions with the well-being of their staff, teachers and students in mind in line with their strategy. For example, the School District is a large corporation that has a board, shareholders (property owners in the district) and stake holders and they are accountable to all of them. As a corporation they need to make decisions both in their self-interest but also for the benefit of the community, a simple capitalist principle. Their self-interest was to keep schools open based on budgetary constraints, however, when you only act in your self-interest you cause problems. As a school District they are an interesting corporation where they not only have to act in their own self-interest, but the self-interests of all those involved, and the greater good of the community and local government. To make these decisions you need to have good strategic decisions.
By waiting to make a decision to delay or cancel school till traffic was already happening played into their self-interest. The District did make a good decision by keeping children already at schools after the decision, stating they would care for those children till the afternoon when the roads were safer. This was a good management decision!
Analyzing self-interest a little more, parents were upset that the district did not act with their children’s safety in mind. The Districts response was that parents should make the call and exercise their own judgment. This is a strategic mistake on the districts part. As a governmental corporation the public looks to them for guidance. Area businesses, who need to stay open to make money as well, acted with their workers and customers in mind and delayed their starts or closed altogether as it was good for business. They take the ultimate responsibility for making a decision for their involved parties. To blame it on parents or put the responsibility on them shows that are leaders cannot think like managers or leaders. In one aspect of Dr. Champions Statement putting the responsibility on parents, he is right. In the most recent election for school board, I believe for our area there were a total of 3,200 votes to elect our representative for the Four Points School Board Seat. While we do not vote for the superintendent we vote for the board which hires and pays the superintendent and also sets the strategy for the year in concert with the administration. By not participating in this process, those that did not vote have given away their right to criticize the district. As shareholders in the Leander School Corporation we need to express our pleasure or displeasure by voting, by showing up at board meetings, not by complaining about individual management decisions. We need to hold them to strong strategic decisions not question management decisions. Focusing on the budget is important, but when we are running at a deficit year over year we have put ourselves in a strategic mess that forces us to make bad decisions. Yes putting our children in danger is bad, but the truth of the matter is we should be upset equally about why we are in that mess.
