We live in 2014, and to reach people there are multiple ways. One of the quickest ways to get to people is the use of socail media. Social Media can be advertising, it can be informative, and it can be a way to get information out quickly and to a large group. However, Social Media is not the silver bullet we think it is.
Yes, if we want to get our message out to younger clients, millenials and the like, then we do need to grasp social media, but ther eis a problem. According to the regulatory organizations that govern advisors and insurance agents anything done on social media is considered marketing and thus subject to antiquated laws form the 1980’s before computers even were being used on a wide basis, surely before the internet and Social Media.
Of course they are in the right, making sure we don’t mislead clients with false claims and we are fair in our claims and advertisings, especially now since it is easier to claim things and distribute them across to large groups. So we need the regulations but we need to also be able to use social media to advertise and reach our customers. Companies are so afraid of running amok of the different regulations that are restricitng and conflicting, so they don’t allow advisors presence on Social Media. This restricts advisors from getting the message out, and in an enviornment today where we need to get the message out more than we do this is a very restrictive policy. However, the intention is there, the implementation is important. So what can we do?
First, we need to post on social media, but with approved articles and ideas. We need to petition to be able to use Facebook and Linked In and other sites but do it wihtin the approved advertising guidelines. Second, our writings, have to be educational not prescriptive. Think of these articles as your tools to educate our clients and you in creating a plan to do this the right wy.
The next way is to be a content expert in your field. I help advisors grow their practice and I work with Small Business Owners as well, so I write on those contents as an expert. Writing in generalities and give an opportunity to create a discussion could be a safe way for us to meet the guidelines we have to meet but also create a discussion online and drw clients to us. What are your thoughts?
